What country code extensions should I register?
You can choose from 250 domain extensions or TLDs to register a domain name, e.g. .be or .com. Which domain extensions are recommended for registration?
Using nomeo.be as an example, ".be" is the extension or TLD ("Top Level Domain"). Domain extensions can be divided into 2 types: country code TLDs and generic TLDs.
TLD's or domain extensions
Each country has its own domain extension or country code TLD. It is based on the two-letter ISO country code. For example:
- Belgium: ".be"
- The Netherlands: ".nl"
- France: ".fr"
Apart from these country code TLDs, there's an innumerable amount of genereic TLDs, often serving a specific purpose. ".com" for example, is used for commercial purposes; ".org" for non-commercial organizations and so on.
Generally spoken, it is recommended to register all country code domain extensions for countries you are or will be active in.
